When a Group Gets Too Big
How to make a large group form into two smaller groups
What to do when a group gets too big
When a group consistently reaches 12-15 members weekly, it’s time to consider splitting into two smaller groups.
Splitting a cohesive group can be challenging, and resistance from members is normal. To navigate this, involve the O&R team for support. Discuss the prospect of splitting with all members to address concerns, and identify experienced, willing, and dependable members—even just two or three core members—to lead the new group.
When splitting the group, take into account the following factors:
- Location: Decide on a suitable suburb for the new group, keeping in mind accessibility via public transportation, such as a main bus route.
- Venue: Find a venue in the chosen suburb for weekly meetings, such as a public room in a community centre or church.
- Timing: Be flexible with the meeting day and time, considering weekdays (during or after work hours) or weekends. Note that Saturdays may conflict with other Grow events.
If you need help finding a venue, reach out to the O&R or NPT teams.
When securing the venue, clarify the rental costs for a 2 to 2.5-hour period. Some venues may offer free use initially or accept donations until the group is established. If rent is required, contact the O&R or NPT teams for financial assistance. Existing groups may also have excess funds to contribute to rent. Under no circumstances should members pay out-of-pocket.
Once you’ve chosen a venue, day, and time, inform the O&R or NPT team so they can advertise it on the Grow website. Then, continue to follow steps 12 to 14 on ‘How To Start a Grow Group’.
