Volunteer duties

There are so many ways to help — from a friendly phone call to leading a training day. Pick what suits you. Many tasks open up gently over time as you settle into Grow and find where your talents lie.

From the start Within 3 months of attending

At your group

  • Help the Organiser set up and pack down before and after meetings.
  • Keep in touch with members who’d appreciate a friendly call or visit.
  • Help host an Area Social or Group Social.
  • Offer your vehicle to drive members to camps and social events.
  • Be a support person for leaders promoting the group (talks, display tables).
  • Help fundraise — for example a Warehouse or Mitre 10 sausage sizzle.

At the Centre

  • Light cleaning and tidying, especially after a training event or social.
  • General upkeep as needed — windows, garden, fridge, freezer, and so on.
  • Light office tasks — computer work, filing, photocopying, scanning, helping the coordinator before a camp or training day.
A little later After 3 months of attending

At your group

  • Be the extra person to make a quorum (three people) in another group — with your Organiser’s and theirs’ permission.
  • Understudy a role: Recorder, Organiser, Sponsor, Treasurer or Centre Coordinator.
  • Share your Grow testimony aloud, or in writing for the newsletter.
  • Write encouraging articles, or help edit and produce the newsletter.
  • Attend COGS public meetings and understudy online grant applications.
  • Understudy leaders at public-speaking events or training-day talks.
In time After two or three years

(a rough guide only)

  • Lead and organise training talks.
  • Represent members and groups at O&R, Area Program and NPT meetings.
  • Train upcoming members for public talks promoting Grow.
  • Help convene Grow weekend camps.
  • Step into various roles as needed — learning to delegate and walk alongside, “on tap but not on top”.
Your trade Help with your profession or skills

At a group, the Centre, or remotely

  • IT & computer skills — maintaining a website or Facebook page.
  • Trades — handyperson, builder, plumber, electrician, painter, lawns and hedges.
  • Professional skills — lawyer, accountant, writer, journalist.
