When a group gets too big

A full group is a wonderful problem to have — it means Grow is working. When a group consistently reaches 12 to 15 people each week, it’s time to gently grow into two smaller groups, so everyone keeps the intimacy that makes Grow special.

Splitting with care

Dividing a close-knit group can feel daunting, and a little resistance from members is completely natural. The key is to take it gently and with support: involve the O&R team, and talk the idea through openly with everyone so concerns can be heard.

Then, identify a few experienced, willing and dependable members — even just two or three at the core — who are ready to help lead the new group. From there, it’s about finding the right place and time.

What to weigh up

Three things to consider

Location

Choose a suitable suburb for the new group, with good accessibility — ideally on a main bus route.

Venue

Find a regular room in that suburb — a community centre or church hall works well for weekly meetings.

Timing

Be flexible with day and time — weekdays (in or after work hours) or weekends. Note Saturdays can clash with other Grow events.

Sorting the venue & going live

When you approach a venue, ask about the rental cost for a 2 to 2.5-hour slot. Some offer free use to begin with, or simply accept donations until the group finds its feet. If there’s a cost, the O&R or NPT teams can assist.

Once you’ve settled on a venue, day and time, let the O&R or NPT team know so it can be advertised on the Grow website. Then carry on with steps 12 to 14 on the How to Start a Grow Group page.
